Samsung is making a controversial change with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 by removing S Pen support from the foldable entirely, all in the pursuit of making a thinner and more durable device.
The S Pen made its debut on the Galaxy Note series, and forever etched a name for itself in the history of mobile devices. Samsung’s first generations of the Fold series didn’t support the feature, but it has since been in nearly every Galaxy Z Fold release since 2021’s Galaxy Z Fold 3. Nearly, in this case, leaves out last year’s Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition which, in many ways, served as the template for the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
That, sadly, includes the removal of S Pen support in the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Samsung’s latest foldable, despite its many major improvements, no longer supports the S Pen. You won’t be able to use existing S Pens with the Fold 7, nor will Samsung be releasing a new one for this device as was rumored at one point.
Why the removal?
Samsung cites two main reasons. Firstly, the form factor itself. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is drastically thinner at 8.9mm (folded) compared to prior generations, and the digitizer needed for S Pen support adds thickness. Beyond that, removing that digitizer left room for thicker ultra-thin glass, improving the durability.

Yep! I'm out! No pen support, no Fold 7 for me. I use the pen to take notes in OneNote on the R side of the opened screen with my document open on the L side.
Some of Samsung’s competitors offering stylus support in similar form factors (Oppo Find N5 comes to mind) pokes a bit of a hole in this argument, but the trade-off is likely worthwhile to many. Samsung also said that the S Pen hasn’t been used all that much on prior generations, so the impact is also likely minimal.
What do you think? Did you use S Pen support on prior Galaxy Z Fold releases? Let us know if this change affects your opinion on Galaxy Z Fold 7.
