Galaxy Z Fold 7 goes official with drastically thinner design, but a $2,000 price tag

In its biggest hardware update since 2020’s Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung is launching the Galaxy Z Fold 7 today with a drastically thinner design, bigger displays, and a higher price too.

Samsung’s foldables have felt stagnant for years now, with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 realistically only delivering updated specs and some moderate hardware improvements over its predecessor, and the one before that, and the one before that, and the one before that. As our Galaxy Z Fold 6 review explained, it was still a good device, but it didn’t really stand out alongside the quickly improving competition.

As you’ve probably heard by now, that’s finally changing this time around.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a major hardware improvement across the board, starting with the physical hardware. Fold seven measures just 8.9mm thick when it is closed, down from 12.1mm for Fold 6. It’s also just 4.2mm thick when opened up, and it also loses weight, dropping from 239g to 217g. The entire package is now IP48 dust/water resistant, upping the protection against debris.

These changes alone already address some of the biggest complaints of prior Fold generations.

The displays are also changing. The inner display is now an 8-inch panel while the outer display is a larger and wider 6.5-inch panel. That outer display solves another big complaint, as the 2520×1080 panel is roughly the same aspect ratio as a traditional smartphone. The biggest thing missing from the display, though, is S Pen support on the inner screen. Samsung removed this for the sake of making the device thinner, as well as improving the display’s durability.

Other changes on Galaxy Z Fold 7 can be found in the camera array, with a new 200MP camera at the core and backed up by a 12MP sensor with an ultrawide lens, and a third 10MP sensor for telephoto. You’ll also now find the same 10MP selfie cameras on both the inner and outer displays, as Samsung has ditched the under-display tech on the inner display which previously limited the camera to just 4MP.

Under the hood, you’ll find Snapdragon 8 Elite paired with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage. The same 4,400 mAh battery still powers the show and charges at 25W. You’ll get Android 16 out of the box with One UI 8 and the promise of 7 years of both major Android OS and security updates.

Colors include Jet Black, Silver Shadow, Blue Shadow, and the Samsung.com exclusive Mint.

Pricing is the other, somewhat unfortunate change. Samsung will be charging $1,999.99 in the US for the 12/256GB base tier of the Galaxy Z Fold 7. It’s an increase of $100 from last year, which in itself was $100 more than the three generations prior. Early buyers can save up to $1,150 with trade-ins through Samsung.com, and there are many offers through carriers as well.
