Gemini Gems are coming to the Gmail, Drive, and Docs side panel

Gems are customized instances of Gemini tailored for specific tasks. After previously being limited to the Gemini app, Gems are now coming to the Gmail, Docs, and other Google Workspace side panels.

Gems can help you further leverage the power of Gemini in a way that’s customized to your needs more efficiently by minimizing repetitive prompting.

Google offers pre-made Gems like Writing editor, Brainstormer, Learning coach, and Coding partner, but the real utility comes in creating your own to “complete specific goals, tasks, and workflows.” Notably, they can be grounded in files that you upload.

When you open the Gemini side panel in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, there’s a new Gems section with a list of the pre-made and custom macros. You can use Workspace capabilities like @-mentioning, accessing files/folders, and more.

Example use cases include:

  • Leverage a copywriting Gem to create posts and content tailored to your target audience, pre-loaded into the Gem.
  • Create a Gem that helps with sales interactions that is grounded on information for a specific company, prospect, or industry.
  • Leverage an “assistant gem” tailored to your job role to help provide more relevant summaries for you and content for internal communications.
  • Leverage a Gem designed to help pressure test content from a certain persona (e.x C-Suite or CEO) to help you create the most compelling message.

Tapping “Create a Gem” opens gemini.google.com. This is “available for Google Workspace customers who can access Gemini in the side panel of Workspace apps and Gems in the Gemini app.” It will be rolling out over the coming weeks.

We’re seeing it with Workspace Labs today on a personal account.
