The AI takeover of search continues, with YouTube now testing out a nearly full-screen AI overview page for video search results.
In its latest test, YouTube is showing an “AI-powered search results carousel” in video search results. This will incorporate information as well as videos and takes up virtually the entire page, pushing actual video search results out of view on the mobile app.
YouTube explains:
We’re introducing a new AI-powered search results carousel to suggest videos and topic descriptions by creators across YouTube. Imagine searching for “best beaches in Hawaii” — you could see an AI-generated carousel highlighting clips from videos showcasing the best snorkel spots and volcanic beaches, complete with descriptions and more videos to plan your ideal day.
This new format is only being tested with YouTube Premium subscribers in the US for the time being, and only on searches that include “shopping, travel, or things to do in a specific place.” The test is fully opt-in via the youtube.com/new page and these will only show up on the Android and iOS apps.
The other AI-powered change coming to YouTube is an expansion of the conversational AI tool that appears under videos. YouTube says this feature will start appearing for non-Premium YouTube users in the US “in the coming days.”
