The Galaxy Z Fold 7 will not be the thinnest foldable of 2025

Rumors have been circling and debating how thick the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be for months. With the latest leaks in mind, there’s still a big chance that what was touted as the thinnest foldable of 2025 still won’t beat the Honor Magic V5.

Honor is gearing up to launch the Magic V5 in early July, and the company is trying to develop and release a device that does everything the Magic V3 did, but better. The phone was remarkably thin, and not just at the time, but even now. The Magic V3 measured 9.2mm thick when folded.

By current foldable standards, that’s insanely thin. It seems like the after-effect of that device release was a race for companies to try to come up with something comparable. OnePlus didn’t develop a foldable this year, but Oppo released the Find N5 at 8.93mm thick. That beats Honor’s previous model by a few literal hairs and still comes in as incredibly thin.

Even Samsung has been making efforts to make a statement with a much thinner foldable. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is set to be released on July 9, and there have been rumors about how much material Samsung has been able to trim from the device. The company has already begun its Galaxy Reserve campaign prior to launch.

The most recent leaks indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will measure 9mm when folded, with each side coming in at 4.5mm thick. That’s thin – extremely thin. But it might not be enough.

Honor just teased the Honor Magic V5, and with that, the official device thickness. According to the company, the Magic V5 will measure an impressive 8.8mm thick. That beats the record Oppo had (8.93mm) and deletes any hope Samsung had of developing the thinnest foldable in 2025.

In teaser images, it looks stunningly thin:

Now, to be fair, we’re talking about millimeters of material – and fractions of a millimeter at that. In your hand, you’re likely never going to feel the difference between any of these devices unless you’re holding them side-by-side. Going from a Galaxy Z Fold 6 to the Magic V5, yes, you will feel a difference. But in thicknesses of 0.2mm between these two models, there is little to brag about.

What each of these companies has been able to do with foldable is likely unthinkable just a few years ago. Current slab-style flagships like the Pixel 9 series are almost as thick, and holding each will yield very little difference. Where it might matter is in weight. Between the hinge construction and batteries, there might be a noticeable difference.

Between foldables, though, we’re getting to a point in advancement where thickness really doesn’t matter.

Samsung has reservations open now for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 series, with a $50 credit when you pre-order and a free entry for a chance to win $5,000. Reservations are free, and there’s no obligation to actually buy a device if you sign up, but there’s no other time you can get that $50 credit.
