Google Pixel ‘growing steadily’ in Canada with a top 3 spot in the country

Google Pixel still pales in comparison to other brands on the global smartphone stage, but these devices are slowly gaining ground in the market. In the latest example, Google Pixel is said to be growing in Canada, and appears to be the country’s third-largest phone brand.

In a report from Counterpoint Research, Google Pixel is said to be “growing steadily” in Canada’s premium smartphone market. That market as a whole is growing, as smartphones with a retail cost over $700 now make up 75% of the country’s smartphone shipments.

The report brings out that Google in particular seems to be benefitting here, with “high demand for the Pixel 9 series” in 2024 alongside Canadian interest in foldables, including Pixel 9 Pro Fold, pushing the brand forward, and into some exclusive company.

No numbers are shared in the report, but Statcounter provides some insight.

It’s estimated, based on browsing data, that Google Pixel currently holds around 8% of the smartphone market in Canada. That’s up from around 6.5% in December 2024. Looking back from 2022 to today, Pixel has indeed been “growing steadily,” being up from around 2-3% back in mid-2022.

As Counterpoint brings out, though, Samsung and even more so Apple hold dominant positions in the market. Samsung is estimated to make up somewhere around 25% of the market, while Apple sits comfortably in the mid-50 to low-60% range, again per data from Statcounter.

According to Counterpoint’s Canada Channel Share Tracker, over 75% of Canada’s smartphone sales in 2024 came from devices with an MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of over $ (USD) 700. Apple (iPhone 16 series) and Samsung (Galaxy S series) hold a dominant share of Canada’s premium smartphone market. In recent years, Google has made significant inroads in this segment. The high demand for the Pixel 9 series drove a significant rise in Google’s premium smartphone market share during 2024.

Other regions where Google Pixel appears to be making headway include Japan and Europe.
