Android 16’s eventual notification & Quick Settings split will be optional, leak shows [Video]

One of the things missing in the first Android 16 QPR1 beta that was seen in leaked builds prior was a split between the notification tray and the Quick Settings panel. That’s still happening, but it will also be optional as a new leak shows.

“Leaked” builds of Android 16 earlier this year showed off progress on the return of having notifications and Quick Settings on two separate panels. That’s something that other Android brands have been doing in recent years, with Samsung being the most notable and recent example.

But in the first Android 16 QPR1 beta, this split wasn’t anywhere to be found, but it does appear that it’s still coming.

Leaker MysticLeaks on Telegram today shared a video of Android 16’s “Separate” and “Combined (classic)” notification and Quick Settings options. The video shows the existing behavior, as well as the “Separate” design that splits the two and allows for swiping from either side of the display to actually access either panel.

The leak doesn’t offer any insight into when this change will be available besides saying that it may be “way after” the current initial beta. It’s added that the new design is not yet finished and that the “separated one is buggy” when additional content is being shown.

Notably, this appears to be showing up in a dogfood build of Android 16 (one that would be internally used at Google), so it’s hard to know for certain when this might appear.

What do you think of a split notification tray and Quick Settings panel in Android 16? Do you want it at all?
