Google bringing Mariner browser agent to Gemini app with ‘Agent Mode’

As previewed in December, Project Mariner is Google DeepMind’s research prototype exploring the “future of human-agent interaction, starting with browsers.” Google AI Ultra subscribers now have access to Project Mariner, while the browser agent capabilities are coming to the Gemini app and Search.

The latest version of Project Mariner can look up information, research, make bookings, buy things (with your explicit confirmation), and more. This “system of agents” can “complete up to ten different tasks at a time.”

Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US are now getting to Project Mariner with a dashboard UI where you enter your task. You’ll see a live preview at the left, while what’s happening is noted at the right.

These underlying capabilities are coming to the Gemini API for developers. It’s coming to Google products “throughout the year.”

In the Gemini app, the desktop web app will soon get an “Agent Mode” with Google AI Ultra. Your chat with Gemini appears at the left, while the right shows a web page where the actions are taking place: “Imagine simply stating your objective, and Gemini intelligently orchestrates the steps to achieve it. Agent Mode seamlessly combines advanced features like live web browsing, in-depth research and smart integrations with your Google apps, empowering it to manage complex, multi-step tasks from start to finish with minimal oversight from you.”

Meanwhile, in Google Search’s AI Mode, Project Mariner can purchase tickets:

Just ask, “Find 2 affordable tickets for this Saturday’s Reds game in the lower level” and Al Mode will kick off a query fan-out, looking across sites to analyze hundreds of potential ticket options with real-time pricing and inventory, and handle the tedious work of filling in forms. Al Mode will present ticket options that meet your exact criteria, and you can complete the purchase on whichever site you prefer – saving you time while keeping you in control.
