An early look at Material 3 Expressive for Google apps: Gmail, Fitbit, more

At The Android Show, we saw Material 3 Expressive for Android 16 and Wear OS 6. Google also shared early looks at Material 3 Expressive redesigns for first-party apps on Android.

The Fitbit app is redesigning individual stats pages. In the case of Steps, Google is replacing the top tabs for Day, Week, Month, and Year with a floating version at the bottom. It’s a pill within the wider pill for improved one-handed reachability.

Otherwise, the information layout is mostly unchanged, but Fitbit is now leveraging more color in the graph when you’ve hit your goal. Additionally, the checkmark is placed in a prominent Material shape.

In the case of Gmail, we see the revamped inbox view. Notably, your message list is displayed on a card with rounded top corners. When you swipe to archive (or other custom action), there’s a prominent animation. Meanwhile, The search field, hamburger button, and account switcher is on a separate background layer that has a more vibrant theme. The “Compose” FAB is also much bolder compared to before.

Finally, we see a fullscreen albums view for Google Photos that makes use of a floating toolbar for sharing, adding photos, and making edits. Currently, this UI is placed at the very top, with this redesign much more focused.

These Material 3 Expressive redesigns will eventually make their way to all Google apps.
