Gemini coming to Android Auto with Live, automatic translation, more [Video]

As expected, Google is bringing Gemini to Android Auto and Android Automotive starting “in the coming months,” and there’s an early preview of what it will be capable of.

It’s no secret that Google Assistant is crumbling, with Gemini being the replacement. This is happening on phones, and now it’s coming for Google’s other platforms. Ahead of I/O 2025, Google has announced that both Android Auto and Android Automotive (Google built-in) are getting Gemini support.

Gemini will debut first on Android Auto “in the coming months.”

Google explains that Gemini will support new functionality on top of what users expect from Google Assistant, such as searches and voice replies to messages. This includes being able to ask for more specific things in searching for a location, as well as asking for details about a business. Google’s example sees the user asking for a summary of a restaurant, which includes details about a specific dish, the “vibe” of the restaurant, and the service. It’s added that you’ll be able to get additional context from other apps such as YouTube Music or Spotify, as well as Google Calendar. Another example Google brings out is the ability to pull the location of “your kid’s soccer game” from Gmail.

Beyond that, Gemini on Android Auto will also be able to automatically translate outgoing messages. Users can ask Gemini to send messages to a specific contact in a different language, with Gemini translating what you’ve said before sending it to the other user. Google says this works in over 40 languages and allows for editing the message “without having to start over.”

Gemini on Android Auto will also support Gemini Live for conversational interactions.

Google explains:

Live is a conversational experience with Gemini that is a perfect fit in the car. Just say “Hey
Google, let’s talk” to brainstorm, explore and learn something new with Gemini. Have a crucial
meeting? Prepare confidently with help from Gemini, by asking…, “I need to have a
conversation with my boss about a new promotion. How do I go about this?” and even refine
your strategy with “When is the best time of day to have this conversation?” You’ll get answers
on the go, without taking your hands off the wheel.

As mentioned, this will all be rolling out to Android Auto “in the coming months,” and will then appear on Android Automotive “later this year.”
