NotebookLM is powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash

In addition to announcing Audio Overviews in 50+ languages and letting users pre-order the native mobile app this week, Google shared that NotebookLM is currently powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash.

Back in December, Google said NotebookLM was using 2.0 Flash. Since Gemini 2.5 Flash has thinking capabilities depending on the prompt, NotebookLM “should start to see more comprehensive answers, particularly to complex, multi-step reasoning questions.”

With Audio Overviews, Google credited Gemini’s native audio support as making possible the language expansion.

2.5 Flash (experimental) is currently available in the Gemini app with all capabilities. It will presumably replace 2.0 Flash as the base model once it’s stable. (At that time, Google could stop offering 2.5 Pro to free users.)

For third-party developers, gemini-2.5-flash-preview-04-17 is in preview. Last month, Google said that more improvements are coming soon before it becomes generally available (“for full production use”).
