Google’s past base model flagship Pixel 8 is a great pickup if you want a replacement for an older phone as it’s just $305 right now on Amazon’s renewed device storefront.
We don’t subscribe to the idea that you have to go out and buy the newest phone every time. Smartphones are so good now that getting the latest and greatest sometimes isn’t cost-effective. In our experience, the previous generation offers a lot of value for money because it is new enough to offer new features, and the discounts can be incredibly deep just a year after launch.
Although the Pixel 8 is now almost 2 years old, it has a lot going for it. Unlike the Pixel 8a or even the new Pixel 9a, you’re getting much of the previous generation flagship. That means an excellent 50MP camera, more premium materials, plus it’s doing all that with 6 years of software updates left in the tank. If we extrapolate out, that’s around $50 per year. Sure, you might not use your phone that long, but at least there’s some resale value once you’re done with it.
Amazon currently has the unlocked 128GB variant of the base Pixel 8 for a very low $305 in excellent condition or an even more affordable $293 in “acceptable” condition. If you don’t need an unlocked unit, you can get even steeper discounts with the Pixel 8 locked to Xfinity, T-Mobile, or AT&T for $290. In terms of the package, you get the Tensor G3 chip, 8GB RAM, plus an almost flagship-tier camera with a 50MP main sensor. It’s still a great buy and even better as a backup given the Pixel 9a comes in almost $200 more expensive.
If you prefer the Pixel 8 Pro, it’s not quite the lowest it has been in the past, but at $379 for an unlocked, renewed handset, you get a great deal on the second-best Pixel phone available today. If you care about the smooth experience, top-tier camera, and arguably a more hand-friendly design, you simply can’t go wrong.
