The latest Gemini app will be GitHub, with this Extension coming to the web. This is Gemini’s latest third-party integration after Spotify and WhatsApp.
The GitHub app will let users attach a repository to their prompt, and ask Gemini to:
- Help you better understand the codebase
- Answer questions about specific functions
- Suggest code additions and improvements
- Debug issues
Here are some example prompts:
- What external libraries are used in the attached code?
- How can the attached code be more efficient?
- Write event handlers for the attached code to recommend products to users.
Once available, opening the ‘plus’ menu for “Import code” will let you enter the GitHub repository or branch URL. Google notes you “can add only one repository, with up to 5,000 files and a maximum size of 100 MB, to a chat.” Confirm the “Import” and follow any initial set-up instructions: “To import a private repository, your GitHub account that has access to that repository must be linked to your Google Account. If it isn’t, you’ll get the option to link it.”
Limitations of this integration include:
- Retrieve commit history, pull requests, or other metadata
- Read a repository by including a GitHub URL directly in your prompt
- Write to a code repository
While importing is only available on gemini.google.com, “you can continue that chat in the Gemini mobile app and Gemini web app on your mobile devices.”
Once rolled out, GitHub will appear on the Gemini apps page for you to enable/disable. It’s not available on accounts we checked today.
