Pocket Casts can now generate episode transcripts

Pocket Casts has gained the ability to generate episode transcripts if you subscribe to the Android or iOS app.

To access, start playing an episode and open the overflow menu for the “Transcript” button, which you can move into the main toolbar. Previously, the app would just show transcripts that were manually provided by podcast creators.

Pocket Casts is now “automatically generating them for new episodes from the most-followed podcasts.” The fullscreen UI notes how “This transcript is automatically generated and available to Plus subscribers only.” There is unfortunately no follow-along or line-by-line highlight, like other implementations. You can select any text in the transcript and copy it.

You get playback controls and the timeline scrubber at the bottom, with a search button in the top-right corner. Results are highlighted with the ability to quickly move between mentions.

This ability to generate transcripts has rolled out with version 7.85 of Pocket Casts for Android and iOS. You have to be a Plus ($3.99 per month/$39.99 annual) or Patron ($9.99 per month/$99.99 annual) subscriber.

Other recent Pocket Casts updates include a redesigned (blurred) podcast header, smart folders (with automatic categories like Comedy, TV & Film, Technology, etc.), and modernizing the Classic widget with Glance.
