Google TV Streamer drops to $79 in its first major discount

The Google TV Streamer launched last year to replace the Chromecast with a new price of $99, a bit of a hard pill to swallow for some. Now, Google is offering the first major discount on the Google TV Streamer, with a sale price to $79.99.

Available through the Google Store, Best Buy, Amazon, and other major retailers, this Google TV Streamer sale is the first one to date. 9to5Toys notes that some random, often sketchy discounts have appeared in the past few months, but this is the first discount Google itself has issued on the streaming box.

The $79.99 price is down from the usual $99.99, a $20 and 20% discount off of the usual price, and a middle ground between the Streamer’s usual price and the price of the Chromecast (4K) that it replaced.

While there are much more affordable Google TV streaming devices available today – Walmart’s Onn brand immediately comes to mind, with the Onn 4K Pro being a direct comparison – the Streamer offers an experience that’s hard to match with this platform. The Streamer has more memory than anything else readily available on the market today, and has the horsepower to provide a very smooth and snappy experience.

In our review we said:

The best changes are the performance and storage uplift – which was always a complaint leveled at the Chromecast. Sure, the Nvidia Shield TV Pro remains practically untouched, but you get improved codec support and a vastly improved Google TV experience that feels more in line with the $99 entry price this time around.
