Google teases new homepage with Discover news stories and ‘At a glance’ widgets

The Google homepage is getting a major shakeup, as the company has announced that its Discover news feed and a new “At a glance” widget section will be coming to the Search experience on desktop, though there’s no word on when.

For many years, Google.com has had the same core design. Google’s logo, often with fun variations, with a search box and two buttons – “Google Search” and “I’m Feeling Lucky.” But, soon, this will apparently change.

At a Search Central Live event in Madrid, Google has confirmed plans to bring Discover and “At a glance” to the Search homepage. Images shared at the event (as captured by SEO Consultants Clara Soteras and Gianluca Fiorelli, via Search Engine Roundtable) show a design with Google’s existing desktop homepage design with two blocks underneath for Discover news and other information. The secondary block includes a few “At a glance” widgets for weather, sports scores, and more, while the block also shows “frequently visited” websites and information from Calendar.

This design is virtually identical to a test that Google ran in 2023 where Discover was added to the homepage. Another prior test was run in 2022 with a different design.

Google showed off the new UI as it looks to “expand surfaces” for Discover with a “more relevant, responsive experience.” Also shown was “more personalization” via “Following” topics.

There’s no word on when this will happen or whether or not it will be optional, but it’s clear that Google feels this experience is finally ready.
