Google updates Play Books with Dynamic Color

Play Books was one of the last Google apps to get a Material You redesign in February of 2024, and it now has Dynamic Color theming.

Previously, Play Books stuck to the blue default accent color and dark or white backgrounds when it picked up Material 3.

The app now adopts Dynamic Color for the bottom bar, including the background and current tab indicator. The search field and top bars are similarly themed.

Old vs. new

When reading a book, the white, sepia, or black page is unchanged, but Display options and the scrolling background have been refreshed.

Overall, this is a straightforward update — the Library tab has the best implementation, with padding issues in other places — for an app that rarely gets new features. The Dynamic Color color consistency is appreciated, and we’re seeing it with Play Books 2025.3.7.2.

Other apps, which are still actively developed, that have yet to get Dynamic Color include:

  • Google: I doubt the Search results page will get themed, but that leaves the bottom bar and Discover as major surfaces. The latter already has Dynamic Color to the left of the homescreen.
  • Play Store
  • Google Maps: Probably sticking to its recently introduced teal palette.
  • Google TV: Likely as a former app in the Play family. (Play Games still has the Google Material Theme!)
