This time of year means there are always a few launches that end up being all jokes and no end product. Dbrand, however, is continuing the tradition of launching an April Fools-themed prodocut, though the company fully intends on shipping it out as a reality. Touch Grass is a new skin from Dbrand, and it’s glorious.
Generally speaking, Dbrand likes to stick to the flatter side of vinyl skins, which usually sit pretty flush to the device. In a wonderous shift from that, Touch Grass is one of the company’s lushest releases. The skin applies just like any other, and it covers not only the back of the Pixel 9 but the camera bar too. On my end, I didn’t apply the camera bar piece, and I think it looks pretty good. If you want to go the Chia Pet route, the camera bar sticker is a good addition.
The Touch Grass skin form Dbrand is nothing like I’ve ever felt on a smartphone because, well, it isn’t. Dbrand says that it’s developed by applying polyethylene strands using an electrostatic charge — that’s why they essentially stand straight up. The skin itself is meant to mimic grass in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo.
The skin itself feels very weird to use, but I kind of love it. For those who have an issue with weird textures, the Dbrand Touch Grass skin might not be for you. For astroturf lovers, it’s a fantastic skin to stick on the Pixel 9, or any other device you might have. It’s certainly going to stay on my Pixel 9 for the indefinite future.
Dbrand is releasing the skin today for what looks like the Pixel 6 series and later, as well as tons of other devices, including Samsung phones. Just get ready to navigate a Windows 98-style interface to get one on the website. It’s even available as a Dbrand Cube skin. As is the case with April 1 release, the Touch Grass skin is a limited release and will only be available while supplies last.
