Huawei Pura X doesn’t know whether it’s a flip phone or a book-style foldable [Video]

Huawei just announced the Pura X, its latest foldable, and it’s a departure from existing form factors, slotting somewhere in between a flip phone and a book-style foldable.

Announced in China today (via Weibo), the Huawei Pura X is a new foldable that’s pretty unique in terms of its form factor. Huawei describes the Pura X as a “wide folding” device. It seems most similar to a flip phone foldable, like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 or Motorola Razr, with a cover display next to the cameras which can be used for certain tasks, but a larger display inside to get more things done.

That wider inner display looks closer to the aspect ratio of something like an iPad Mini than it does the tall and narrow designs of flip phone foldables, or the near-square design of most book-style foldables. In Huawei’s videos, the device is shown used in both its portrait and landscape orientations, but it seems like the intended use case is to open the device like a flip phone, even though it could easily be opened like a book-style foldable.

The Huawei Pura X has a 6.3-inch internal display at a 16:10 aspect ratio (via Android Authority) with a 3.5-inch outer display. Those are both smaller than what’s found in the Motorola Razr+, but it does seem like there’s probably a bit more screen real estate on that inner display due to the aspect ratio. A 4,720 mAh battery powers the device.
