Google Photos is more widely rolling out a simplified bottom bar that removes the “Memories” tab on Android.
The Memories feed has been moved to the Collections tab. Now called “Moments,” it appears alongside Peoples & pets, On this device, Albums, Documents, and Places. The rounded square preview cycles through recent pictures.
Besides the rename, there are no other changes to this “scrapbook-like” feature that auto-categorizes images and videos from the same event: “Your photos, organized into your best moments. Add details, search and share with others.” It was introduced in August of 2023.
With this change, “Memories” in Google Photos just refers to the popular carousel at the top of your main gallery.
Zooming out, the Google Photos bottom bar is down to Photos, Collections, and Ask (or Search). A similar change is made to the navigation rail layout on tablets and foldables. This three-tab layout follows Google Maps last year and looks cleaner. Personally, Material 3 bottom bars also look okay with four tabs, but five (like Google Home) is pushing it to my eye.
This first rolled out to iOS at the end of last year and started appearing on Android in January. Over the past few days, we’re seeing wider availability with Google Photos 7.20 for Android. Force stop from App info if it’s not yet live on your device.
