Google is testing a tweak to Gemini’s placement in Gmail for Android that restores the account switcher to its original placement.
When the Gemini side panel (officially known as “Gmail Q&A“) was introduced to Gmail for Android and iOS, the Google Account switcher moved to the left with the search bar. The sparkle got to occupy the space that’s reserved for switching accounts in every other first-party app across all platforms.
This might now be changing. With some Workspace accounts, we’re now seeing the profile avatar restored to the top-right with Gemini moved to the left. The pill-shaped bar shrinks as a result, but the touch target is still quite large.
Old vs. new
With this design, Google preserves the Account switcher’s uniformity and muscle memory when tapping or swiping to quickly switch accounts. We’re seeing this change (with version 2025.03.02.x) on multiple devices signed into a particular account, but it’s not widely available.
In other Gmail for Android (and iOS) changes, Google is tweaking the attachment menu when composing an email. Tapping the paperclip icon will show a revised menu with options for Photos, Camera, Files, and Drive. The shortcut for taking a new picture is new, with everything now accompanied by icons. This change is not yet widely rolled out.
