OnePlus may have a new foldable in the works after all – what could it be?

In the hype ahead of the Oppo Find N5’s launch, OnePlus broke everyone’s hearts with the announcement that it wouldn’t be releasing “Open 2” this year. However, it seems OnePlus does still have some new foldable in the works.

2023’s OnePlus Open was a carbon copy of the Oppo Find N3, effectively acting as the international variant of that foldable’s hardware. It was largely expected that the same pattern would follow with the Oppo Find N5. Sadly, though, OnePlus openly confirmed in February that it would not be releasing a foldable “this year,” even though its reasoning makes no sense.

OnePlus explained:

At OnePlus, our core strength and passion lie in setting new benchmarks and challenging the status quo across all product categories. With that in mind, we’ve carefully considered the timing and our next steps in foldable devices, and we have made the decision not to release a foldable this year.

While there’s no “OnePlus Open 2” coming this year, it does sound like the company is still working on a new foldable of some kind.

Leaker Max Jambor says on Twitter/X that OnePlus is working on a foldable device codenamed “Pagani,” while Abhishek Yadav adds that this is a book-style foldable.

There’s no word on what this device is – besides that it apparently shares the same general form factor as OnePlus Open and Oppo Find N5 – or when it might be released. OnePlus’ statement in February suggests that such a device wouldn’t be released during the current calendar year.

So what could this device be?

It’s entirely possible this is just a plain sequel to the OnePlus Open, held back by another year for whatever reason. But reading between the lines of OnePlus’ statement, there are a couple of additional possibilities that come to mind. The mention that OnePlus wants to “redefine multiple categories” could suggest that the delay is to work on a flip-style device as well. It could also be that OnePlus wants to “[challenge] the status quo” in price, with a device that’s more affordable. The OnePlus Open only undercut its competitors by $100.

What do you think? What would you want from a future OnePlus foldable?
