Global launch date announced for Xiaomi 15 Ultra, a literal ‘camera phone’

Xiaomi took the term “camera phone” literally when they designed the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. The phone looks and is expected to act like one. The company announced the global launch date for the Xiaomi 15 Ultra alongside an official image of the phone.

Based on rumors, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is expected to come with some heavy-duty internals. That includes an expected Snapdragon 8 Elite, a 6.73-inch AMOLED screen, and a 5,500mAh battery. It has all of the workings of a good, strong device, contingent on the software being acceptable.

On the camera end, however, Xiaomi is putting a lot of stock into its newest device. The phone itself looks like a classic 35mm camera, complete with a silver stripe that emulates the metal accent found on those same cameras. In a new photo released by the company, the phone even carries Leica branding across the glass. Xiaomi notes that the phone will also come in black and white variants.

Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, posted a photo of the 15 Ultra on Twitter/X with the caption detailing March 2 as the global launch date for the phone. The caption notes only that the phone has “advanced Leica optics,” with no other details to spare. It’s been rumored that the phone will bring a 50MP wide, ultrawide, and telephoto combo with a 200MP periscope telephoto setup to top it off.

How well it will perform is unknown, but the company is surely setting it up to be a contender for one of the best Android camera arrays to date. Traditionally, phones with camera arrays in the spotlight tend to lean towards gimmicks rather than true performance, and designing the 15 Ultra to look like an actual camera puts that much more pressure on Xiaomi.
