Video calls in Hangouts no longer require a plugin

Video calls through Google Hangouts just got a little easier. Today, Mountain View released an update that lets users launch Hangouts in Chrome without the need of a plugin. All you have to do is click the video call icon, give Hangouts permission to use your computer’s camera and microphone, and that’s it.

This update is now available to Chrome Canary and Dev users and will be rolling out to the browser’s stable build over the next few weeks. Although this is a pretty minor enhancement, it will absolutely make video calls easier for people who are new to Hangouts.
